I’ve been searching for a way to tailor coffee drinks to my preferences without paying a fortune. That’s why I built a list of the best pour-over coffee makers.

I chose the Hario V60 as the overall best because it’s affordable, comes in different materials, and is simple to clean.

9 Best Top Pour-over Coffee Makers

Many pour-over coffee makers will work and look the same. Some differences will come from their aesthetic, warranty period, capacity, and material. I’ll emphasize on why these points are important in a buyer’s guide later in this piece.

For now, here’s some clarification:

  • Dimensions:
    • D: depth
    • W: width
    • H: height

Let’s get to the first pick.

1. Hario V60: Best Overall

hario v60
Price *$
Dimensions4.7 × 5.5 × 4 in (D, W, H)
MaterialCeramic
DesignCone shape
Capacity10 fl oz = 1 6-fl oz cup
Warranty1 year

Pros

  • Offers a high level of control over the brewing process.
  • Comes in a variety of material options to suit different preferences.
  • Easy to clean, requiring just a rinse and dry.

Cons

  • Has a steep learning curve
  • Requires time and attention, making it less suitable for quick brewing.
  • Not ideal for brewing coffee for groups due to its small capacity.

The Hario V60 is ideal for anyone wanting an affordable yet uniquely-shaped device that produces a bright, complex beverage.

It consistently delivers high-quality coffee that rivals more expensive machines. Its easy cleanup and various material options—including plastic, glass, ceramic, and metal—add to its appeal.

The V60 uses a cone-shaped design, which requires fewer coffee grounds than flat-bottomed makers and offers a stronger flavor. However, extraction tends to take longer.

Speaking of extraction, you’ll need practice to master Hario’s pour-over device. As it takes time to learn your pour-over preference. Based on my experience, playing many YouTube videos expedited this learning.

Considering it’s a smaller device, it’s not ideal for serving groups of folks. But it’s excellent for cleaning due to the lack of many complex parts.

Looking for something more affordable? Keep reading.

2. Cafec Flower Dripper: Cheapest Pour-Over Coffee Maker

cafec flower dripper
Price *$
Dimensions4 × 4.25 × 3.75 in (D, W, H)
MaterialPlastic
DesignFlat bottom
Capacity10 fl oz = 1 6-fl oz cup
Warranty1 year

Pros

  • Allows for precise control over the brewing process.
  • Unique flower design enhances the extraction of coffee flavors.
  • Made of high-quality ceramic that retains heat well.

Cons

  • Requires specific Cafec filters, which may not be readily available.
  • The brewing process can be time-consuming and requires attention.
  • The ceramic material, while durable, can break if dropped.

The Cafec Flower Dripper is an excellent choice for coffee enthusiasts who value a rich, full-bodied brew and are interested in experimenting with different brewing techniques.

It’s the most affordable pour-over coffee maker due to its simple yet effective design and the use of cost-effective materials.

Its unique flat-bottom design allows for even extraction of coffee due to coffee flowing through multiple holes. Resulting in a superior flavor profile. Additionally, its affordability does not compromise its quality. Making it a worthwhile investment.

James Hoffmann put the Cafec against many other pour-over makers and it has a balanced extraction percentage and quick(ish) brew time [1]. When seeing the chart he presents in the video, you might not understand ideal extraction percentages.

I clarify what you should look for under the buyer’s guide.

However, flat bottom pour-over makers are more difficult to clean due to their shape and small holes. They also tend to require more beans than their cone-shaped counterparts.

The Flower’s ceramic body acts as a double-edged sword. It holds heat well—great for drink temperature/taste. But it’s not ideal regarding durability. Since ceramic breaks easily.

Due to the specific Cafec filters this maker requires, I wouldn’t recommend it for beginners. I would suggest this next one.

3. Bodum Pour Over Coffee Dripper Set: Best Pour-Over Coffee Maker for Beginners

bodum pour over coffee dripper set
Price *$
Dimensions5.13 × 5.13 × 7.37 in (D, W, H)
MaterialGlass
DesignFlat bottom
Capacity12 fl oz = 2 6-fl oz cups
Warranty1 year

Pros

  • Cleaning is easy and straightforward.
  • Makes coffee as good as a French press.
  • Comes with its own plastic double-walled cup.

Cons

  • Makes weak coffee unless a lot of coffee grounds are used.
  • Not microwave safe.
  • The mug is not well insulated.

The Bodum Pour Over Coffee Dripper Set is ideal for coffee enthusiasts seeking an easy, affordable entry into the world of pour-over brewing.

Its quality construction, ease of use, and the ability to produce coffee comparable to a French press justify its price. Furthermore, its reusable filter contributes to waste reduction and saves money in the long run.

It’s another flat bottomed pour-over maker.

The Bodom presents an easier path to achieve a consistent brew and a more balanced flavor profile due to its flat-bottom design. Since water moves more evenly through coffee grounds.

Many complain that the included cup isn’t well-insulated. I disagree. Out of the many double-walled Bodum cups I’ve had (and broke), they all stayed hot for hours. If I didn’t break everything I touched, I’d still use them.

I recommend this set for beginners since it’ll come with a cup, reusable filter, and the pour-over maker. All at a decent price. However, you’ll need to learn how to master making this type of coffee.

And this “kit” is a great way to do so.

Unlike other flat bottom makers, the Bodom is a bit easier to clean due to everything being larger. The biggest pain would come from cleaning the reusable filter due to the fine mesh.

If you’re after an entry-level machine that’ll do the work for you, here’s an option.

4. De’Longhi 3-in-1 Specialty Coffee Brewer: Best Automatic Pour-Over Coffee Maker

delonghi 3 in 1 specialty coffee brewer
Price *$$$
Dimensions11 × 7.4 × 13 in (D, W, H)
MaterialGlass
DesignNA
Capacity64 fl oz = 6 6-fl oz cups
Warranty1 year

Pros

  • Produces high-quality coffee with all three brewing settings.
  • Has a sleek, space-saving design that is visually appealing.
  • Brews coffee quickly and efficiently.

Cons

  • Lacks features such as a clock, timer, or automatic brewing.
  • Cannot pause or interrupt brewing.
  • The carafe is fragile and prone to cracking.

The De’Longhi ICM17270 is the best automatic pour-over coffee maker due to its ability to replicate the flavor of pour-over coffee.

Despite being a bit high-maintenance and lacking some features like automatic brewing, its superior coffee quality and sleek design make it a valuable addition to any kitchen.

De’longhi’s ICM17270 comes off as more of a drip coffee maker than a pour-over one. However, that’s technically what an automatic pour-over coffee maker is. It’ll boil water in the upper chamber, then release it through the cone-shaped portion into a carafe.

Then the warming plate will keep your drink warm all day. And once it’s done brewing, it’ll automatically shut off after an hour. A great way to start making your coffee, forget it, and return later.

The 3 brewing settings seem to focus on iced coffee, pour-over coffee, and drip coffee. Though, the latter 2 are technically the same.

Despite the features, it includes plenty of downsides. There’s no clock, no way to interrupt your brewing, or no way to set a timer. You must wait for it to finish before moving on to doing something else.

Were you called into an emergency mid-coffee brewing? You have to wait for the automatic turnoff feature to kick in. Can’t stop it from making coffee once it starts.

And you can’t tell the time, what a nightmare. Though, most other devices in this century include clocks.

Here’s something that’ll keep your drink warm and give you more control over your drink.

5. Melitta Pour-Over Coffee Brewer: Best Pour-Over Coffee Maker With Thermal Carafe

melitta pour over coffee brewer 2
Price *$$
Dimensions5.81 × 7 × 7.94 in (D, W, H)
MaterialGlass
DesignFlat bottom
Capacity10 cups
Warranty3 years

Pros

  • Simple and straightforward design.
  • Affordable compared to other models.
  • Easy to clean and dishwasher safe.

Cons

  • Manufacturer’s directions call for more grounds than other models.
  • Lacks durability compared to other models.

The Melitta Pour-Over Coffee Brewer stands out due to its simplicity, portability, and ability to keep coffee warm for a long time.

Its affordable cost, combined with its durable design and the quality of coffee it produces, makes it a cost-effective choice for coffee lovers. Its ease of use and cleaning further enhance its value.

The thermal carafe’s 10-cup capacity makes it an ideal device to serve multiple folks hot coffee throughout the day. Meanwhile, you’ll have control over how your drink is made. No relying on low-tier thermal coffee makers producing bitter-tasting drinks.

I love the thermal carafe’s wide opening and the pour-over mechanism’s large body. As they make cleaning much easier. And if you want to just throw it in the dishwasher, it’s safe to do so. Ensure you throw it on the top shelf, though.

The plastic lip may not survive long if it’s close to the dishwasher’s heating element in the bottom rack.

Like most pour-over makers, the top part is still fragile due to its plastic body. Meaning, you shouldn’t toss it around.

You may not also appreciate the recurring paper filter premium. This next pick eliminates that need.

6. Coffee Gator: Best Pour-Over Coffee Maker With Reusable Filter

coffee gator
Price *$
Dimensions5.5 × 5.5 × 6.8 in (D, W, H)
MaterialGlass
DesignCone-shaped
Capacity27 fl oz = 4.5 6-fl oz cups
Warranty2 years

Pros

  • Offers a rich and smooth flavor profile.
  • Stainless steel filter that eliminates the need for paper filters.
  • Made of heat-resistant borosilicate glass.

Cons

  • The stainless steel filter may allow more coffee sediment to pass through.
  • Requires careful cleaning to maintain optimal performance.
  • The glass carafe can still be prone to breakage.

The Coffee Gator Pour-Over Coffee Brewer is ideal for coffee enthusiasts who value simplicity and sustainability.

Considering its durable construction, reusable stainless steel filter, and the quality of brew it produces, the Coffee Gator Pour-Over Coffee Brewer is worth the price.

The Gator’s cone-shaped design doesn’t require as many coffee grounds due to its narrow shape and results in a stronger flavor. Due to allowing longer contact between the water and coffee beans.

But it’s a nightmare to clean. Coffee Gator attached the cone-shaped party and the carafe. While attractive, you can’t dig in there with a regular sponge and clean any residue. And you’ll need to practice caution when cleaning.

Because you don’t want to shatter the glass. While it’s durable than most other glass carafes, it won’t resist shattering when dropped from kitchen counters.

Steel filters work nicely because they don’t require you to frequently purchase paper filters, but they don’t filter sediment as well. Thus, you may notice more bits of coffee beans in your drink.

Need an alternative? Consider this next option.

7. Kalita Wave: Best Pour-Over Coffee Maker for Travel

kalita wave
Price *$$
Dimensions4.5 × 4.8 × 2.5 in (D, W, H)
MaterialStainless steel, glass, or ceramic
DesignFlat bottom
Capacity10 fl oz = 1 cup
Warranty1 year

Pros

  • Produces a slightly stronger coffee than other pour-over brewers.
  • Unique design promotes even extraction & flow control.
  • Stainless steel version is highly portable and durable.

Cons

  • Filters can easily lose their shape if not stored properly.
  • Limited flexibility when it comes to grind size.
  • Requires specific filters.

The Kalita Wave is ideal for those seeking a portable, durable, and easy-to-use coffee maker. It’s the best pour-over coffee maker for travel due to its compact size and stainless steel construction.

Despite being a premium coffee maker, it’s priced competitively with other pour-over cones, giving it an edge in terms of cost-effectiveness.

The 3 holes at the bottom of the Wave helps with ensuring even flavor extraction. Though, it may prove a pain to clean if a bunch of sticky gunk from coffee residue accumulates.

Which it doesn’t include. You’ll need to hunt for specific Kalita filters, which may prove difficult. Since you can’t walk into any store and grab them. Ensure you buy these filters prior to your trip.

Otherwise, the Wave comes in 3 styles:

  • Stainless steel will prove the most durable, making it ideal for traveling.
  • Glass looks the best, but isn’t good for traveling due to its fragility.
  • Ceramic will hold temperature well; however, it’s also fragile.

If you’re stuck at home and need something to spruce things up, check out the next pick.

8. Chemex: Most Beautiful Pour-Over Coffee Maker

Price *$$
Dimensions24 × 16.25 × 3.3 cm (D, W, H)
MaterialGlass
DesignHourglass
Capacity8 cups
Warranty1 year

Pros

  • Provides clean, rich coffee flavor.
  • Offers a timeless, classic design.
  • Available in multiple sizes, catering to different user needs.

Cons

  • The borosilicate glass can shatter, making it fragile.
  • It doesn’t keep coffee hot for long.
  • Proprietary filters can be hard to find, causing inconvenience.

The Chemex is ideal for coffee enthusiasts who appreciate the art of manual brewing and have a taste for clean, rich coffee.

Its timeless design—was on display in New York’s Museum of Modern Art circa 1943—adds a touch of elegance to any kitchen [2]. Moreover, it’s not just a pretty face; the Chemex is renowned for its ability to produce a smooth, flavorful cup of coffee.

It uses borosilicate glass, which ensures no chemicals will seep into your coffee and mess with its flavors. It also has a belly button to mark a halfway point for your coffee. Great for knowing when it’s close to needing to refill your maker.

You won’t find another coffee maker like the Chemex, though. It has a lathed wooden collar, which prevents you from burning your hands when moving it around. And the bottom of the collar serves as another marker that tells you when you have a fully-brewed carafe.

It’s a minimalist decorative piece that doesn’t cost hundreds of dollars. And every detail on this maker was intentional and served a purpose.

9. Fellow Stagg [X]: Best Pour-Over Coffee Maker UK

fellow stagg

Price *$$$
Dimensions26 × 26 × 27.9 cm (D, W, H)
MaterialSteel & glass
DesignFlat bottom
Capacity591 ml = 4 cups
Warranty2 years

Pros

  • Vacuum insulated body keeps the temperature stable.
  • Unique hole pattern ensures even flow.
  • Comes with a funnel and dosing cup.

Cons

  • Not the most attractive coffee maker.
  • Pricey

The Fellow Stagg [X] is the top choice for those in the UK and Canada due to Fellow’s excellent international warranty policy.

The Fellow Stagg [X] justifies its price with its unique hole pattern for even flow and vacuum-insulated body for temperature stability. Its high-quality build ensures longevity, making it a worthwhile investment for home brewers.

It doesn’t look the best, but due to its flat bottom design, water will flow through your coffee beans more evenly. Resulting in a more balanced taste. Not ideal for those looking for a stronger drink.

And the double-walled glass carafe will help your drink stay warm for longer without having a metallic taste that typically comes with metal carafes. A great way to have great-tasting hot coffee throughout the day.

What is a Pour-over Coffee Maker?

Think of pour-over as manual drip coffee makers. Fill a filter with a medium-coarse grind, pour water over the beans, and wait for gravity to drain the flavor into your cup or carafe.

Unlike drip coffee, pour-over coffee gives you control over these aspects:

  • Time to brew: Aids in flavor extraction.
  • Water temperature: Helps with drink temperature.
  • Speed: The time it takes for the water to seep through grinds; affects taste.

Combine these, and you’ll control your drink’s strength, temperature, texture, and taste.

Buying Guide for Pour-over Coffee Makers

Make your way through this checklist to understand what makes a good pour-over coffee maker:

CriteriaWhy it’s Important
MaterialDurability and taste
Filter TypeBrew quality & cost
DesignEase of use
SizeBrewing capacity
Brew TimeConvenience
Ease of CleaningMaintenance effort
PriceBudget considerations

The following sections will emphasize each criterion further. I’ll talk about what parts of each point are important and why. Then you’ll have a better idea on what you’re buying.

1. Material

  • Ceramic: Balances flavor extraction & heat retention.
  • Glass: Best for those meticulous about pure coffee taste.
  • Stainless steel: Great for keeping drinks hotter for longer.

Ceramic pour-over coffee makers are a popular choice. Their excellent heat retention ensures consistent brewing temperature, enhancing the flavor profile. They’re robust but require careful handling to avoid chipping.

Glass variants offer visual appeal. Watching coffee brew helps you monitor the process. Glass doesn’t absorb flavors or odors, so every brew tastes fresh.

However, it demands delicate handling and isn’t the best at heat retention. Perfect for meticulous brewers who value a pure coffee taste.

Stainless steel pour-overs provide superior durability. Ideal for frequent users or those on the move. They also retain heat well. But they might alter the taste slightly, adding a metallic hint.

2. Filter Type

Pour-over coffee makers often use one of two filter types: paper or metal.

Paper filters are popular for their convenience. They catch more coffee grounds and oils. Offering a cleaner, crisper taste. However, they are single-use, leading to recurring costs and waste.

They can sometimes impart a slightly papery taste. Rinsing before brewing can mitigate this.

Metal filters are reusable, cutting down costs and waste over time. They allow more coffee oils and tiny grounds to seep into the brew, resulting in a full-bodied, robust flavor.

However, they require careful cleaning, and some coffee drinkers might find the taste a bit metallic and too strong.

3. Design

Some pour-over coffee makers have a cone shape, like the Hario V60. This design leads to a strong and flavorful cup. Thanks to the deep grounds bed that water filters through.

Yet, it requires more attention while pouring water.

Flat-bottom designs like the Kalita Wave offer consistency. The water flow is more controlled, leading to a more even extraction and balanced cup of coffee. However, these prove more challenging to clean due to their ridges.

Coffee makers with built-in carafes like the Chemex are aesthetically pleasing and serve multiple cups. But they may demand more careful handling due to the material and shape.

Consider what design suits your needs and lifestyle best.

4. Size

If preparing coffee for yourself, a compact model works well, saving precious kitchen space. If you often serve a group, you’ll need a larger model to brew multiple cups simultaneously.

The water capacity is equally crucial.

A larger capacity lets you brew several cups without refilling, providing convenience when entertaining guests. If you mainly brew for one or two, a smaller-capacity coffee maker can make fresher coffee per serving.

5. Brew Time

Brew time influences the taste and aroma of your pour-over coffee. It’s the length of time water and coffee grounds interact, dictating flavor extraction.

Finding a balance ensures that you have desirable flavor extraction, leading to a well-rounded, flavorful cup.

If extraction is too short, you may under-extract your coffee. Leaving it weak and sour.

A prolonged brew time may over-extract, leading to a bitter, harsh taste.

For example:

The Hario V60, a popular pour-over device, has a typical brew time of 2–3 minutes. It can achieve an extraction yield of around 20% when brewed correctly. Producing a clean, bright cup.

The Chemex, with its thicker filter and slower drainage, might take up to 4–5 minutes [3]. This extended brew time results in an extraction yield of approximately 22%. Creating a coffee with more body and complexity.

Ideal extraction numbers are between 18 and 22% [4]. Otherwise, you may end up with over- or under-extraction.

6. Ease of Cleaning

You want to enjoy your coffee without worrying about demanding clean-up tasks.

Residue build-up can impact the flavor of your brew over time, so frequent cleaning is crucial. Many pour-over coffee makers feature removable components or are dishwasher-safe, simplifying this task.

Models with fewer parts usually are easier to clean. Pick a design that prioritizes easy maintenance to keep your coffee tasting great and clean-up hassle-free.

7. Price

The more you spend; the less likely you’ll need to replace your pour-over device sooner.

Higher-end models often feature durable materials like stainless steel or ceramic. And precision designs that promise optimal water flow for a better brew. They can last longer, delivering good value over time.

Less expensive models may use plastic or glass and might only last for a short time. But they can make a decent cup of coffee.

Pour-over Coffee Makers vs. Other Coffee Maker Types

Consider whether you want a pour-over. Compare it to other coffee makers, first:

Coffee Maker TypeAvg. Price per Cup Best ForRecommended Grind

French Press$0.20–$0.40BeginnersCoarse

† These prices are only estimates based on the cost of coffee beans, filters, water and electricity, and they may vary depending on your location, preferences and equipment.

Drip coffee, Vietnamese coffee makers (Phin), stovetop, and percolator coffee makers cost the least. The latter 3 require no recurring filter costs, yet deliver strong-tasting coffee without breaking the bank.

Beginners may appreciate easier-to-use makers like AeroPress, French press, and clever drippers due to their simple operation.

Cold brew requires some practice to perfect, but it’s a great way to get less acidic coffee.

Siphons demand a lot of practice to perfect. A better option for traditionalists.

Manual and semi-automatic espresso makers require a lot of practice to make the perfect drink, but they’re worth it. Super-automatic and capsule machines automate espresso making, but at a high cost.
